Capitol Records has signed a robot rapper who has amassed over 10 million followers on TikTok.
The first augmented reality (AR) artist to sign with a major label is FN Meka. He is the most popular “virtual being” on TikTok with over a billion views.
This week saw the release of his debut single, “Florida Water.” The song is a collaboration between professional Fortnite player Clix and billboard chart-topper Gunna, who is currently charged in a RICO case alongside Atlanta rapper Young Thug. Although FN Meka technically has a human voice, the rest of his music is entirely artificial intelligence (A.I. )based.
The project, according to Capitol Records, is a mashup of gaming, technology, and music.
The record company described the signing as “a preview of what’s to come” and said it is a part of the evolution of the music industry titan’s 80-year history.
