When the Arsenal Football Club arrived at the Etihad Stadium, their hopes of winning the English Premier League for the first time in 19 years were severely dented.
The Gunners entered the game without confidence after going without a victory for the first time this season in three straight games (Liverpool, West Ham United, and Southampton). In the season’s final title game, Manchester City defeated Arsenal 4-1 thanks to goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, and John Stones. Rob Holding scored for Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, claims that no one predicted his squad would win the title at the beginning of the year.
The stats said at the start of the season that Arsenal were going to finish sixth or seventh. We are where we are with five games to go. Those players deserve a lot of credit, to be where we are after nine and a half months. There are still five games to play. I’ve been in this country for nearly 22 years and I’ve seen a lot of things; I know how much it shifts from game to game. There are no two equal games in this league. First of all, we have to lift our players, because they suffered tonight. They played against an exceptional team – they know that. But we’re an exceptional team as well and today we weren’t at the races at the level that was required to win the game.
With two points more than Manchester City, Arsenal is still in first place in the league. However, the City residents have two games on the Gunners.
