The National Communications Authority (NCA) has permitted Space X Starlink GH LTD, the operator of Starlink Satellite Broadband, to operate satellite broadband services in Ghana.
The NCA issued a terse statement on Thursday, April 25 to announce the approval, stating that the application was approved following the policy approval of the Ghana satellite licensing framework by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization and that “the administrative processes towards the issuance of the license is ongoing and will be completed shortly.”
The transaction, which involves a foreign corporation acquiring a large share in Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure, was reviewed to ensure compliance with existing regulatory frameworks and the potential to improve service delivery and innovation in the industry.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister for Communications and Digitalization, stated in Parliament that the proposal to license Starlink’s application to operate in Ghana was part of the government’s attempts to address the country’s internet interruptions.
She informed the house about the significant internet outages that occurred in the nation on March 18 and mentioned that Starlink was obtaining a license. She also urged other operators to establish themselves in Ghana.
“We must also invest in operationalizing RASCOM, the Regional African Satellite Company, instead of each country going alone,” she had counselled.
