In an unusual move, Samsung has launched a new version of its flagship smartphone—the Galaxy S25 Edge—earlier than expected, aiming to maintain its momentum in the mobile market amid global economic uncertainties and evolving U.S. trade policies.
The Galaxy S25 Edge stands out for its slim profile, measuring just 5.8 millimeters thick and weighing 163 grams, positioning it among the slimmest smartphones currently available. The device is priced from $1,099 and will be available starting May 30.
Samsung recently reported a rise in revenue and profit for its mobile division during the first quarter, thanks in large part to the success of the S25 lineup. However, Samsung Mobile Vice President Daniel Araujo cautioned that smartphone demand may decline in the second quarter due to usual seasonal trends and potential adjustments from global trade tariffs.
Although U.S. President Trump’s reciprocal tariffs took effect in April, they were soon paused, with exemptions granted for key tech products like smartphones and chips. Additionally, the U.S. and China agreed this week to suspend most mutual tariffs, easing some industry concerns.
Araujo noted that the release of the S25 Edge is aimed at maintaining strong sales of its premium models. The device features a 6.7-inch display—matching the size of the S25+—but is noticeably slimmer and lighter. It also includes a dual camera setup and integrates Samsung’s latest AI technologies.
The push for slimmer phones is gaining traction among manufacturers as they aim to provide a premium experience in a more compact design. Industry analysts, like Ben Wood from CCS Insight, see this trend continuing into the latter half of 2025. He remarked that while Samsung is leading with the S25 Edge, Apple is expected to join the trend with its rumored iPhone 17 Air this September. Chinese brands such as Honor and Xiaomi are also likely to follow.
“This seems like a strategic move by Samsung, possibly to pre-empt Apple’s upcoming launch of a thinner iPhone,” Wood added, citing reports of Apple’s plans for a sleeker design in its next-generation devices.
