Despite his worldwide exploits and international fame, three-time Grammys candidate, Rocky Dawuni, has not garnered a mention at the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) since its establishment.
This year, however, Rocky Dawuni has been nominated in the ‘Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year’ category with Ras Kuuku, Epixode, Stonebwoy and Samini, and the “Reggae/Dancehall Song of the year” at the forthcoming VGMAs .
In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, the three-time Grammy nominee said that awards have never been a competition for him, and his nomination in a very competitive category at the VGMAs is nothing but a “good feeling to stand beside his friends and brothers.”
“Awards are not competition for me, including that of VGMA. It is a recognition of works that artists have created and an opportunity to honor and celebrate each creativity. It is always a good feeling for me to stand alongside my friends and brothers. That is why I don’t regard the VGMA as competition,” he said.
Rocky also expressed appreciation to the board of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards program for honoring him, noting that “it is a fantastic occasion to be acknowledged at home.”
“Of course, they are extremely good rivals, but I’m positive there is no better moment than now to have this nomination. That is why I am always filled with gratitude for all my blessings.
‘‘The year under review has been amazing for me as a musician, with my third Grammy nomination for the song Neva Bow Down, and playing a host of concerts around the world. In many ways, it has helped to raise my own profile and Ghanaian music’s visibility worldwide, according to Rocky.
