With four nominations, Nigeria topped the list for the first-ever Grammy category for Best African Music Performance, leaving Ghanaian musicians noticeably absent.
On November 10, 2023, the 2024 Grammy Award candidates were revealed. “Best African Music Performance,” a brand-new category, was established to honor exceptional records that feature distinctive regional expressions from around Africa.
In this newly created category, four Nigerian artists and one South African artist were nominated.
Asake & Olamide’s “Amapiano” (Nigeria), Burna’s “City Boys” (Nigeria), Davido ft. Musa Key’s “Unavailable” (Nigeria), Ayra Starr’s “Rush” (Nigeria), and Tyla’s “Water” (South Africa) are among the nominated artists and songs.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is slated to happen at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 4, 2024. CBS and Paramount+ will broadcast the event. The main show will air after the yearly Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony.
In May 2023, at the Recording Academy’s semiannual Board of Trustees meeting, the creation of these new categories was approved.
This choice is a reflection of the Academy’s dedication to carefully considering and acting upon suggestions from the music industry.
