Renowned Ghanaian gospel artist Joyce Blessing has spoken out against the belief that listening to secular music is spiritually harmful for Christians. Some in the gospel music community, such as veteran musician Apostle Lenny Akpadie, have criticized Christians for singing secular songs, arguing that it contradicts their faith. However, Joyce Blessing, in an interview with 3FM, called such views “hypocrisy.”
She explained that many secular songs have positive, motivational messages that Christians can appreciate. She gave examples of inspirational songs by artists like Akwaboah and Sarkodie, highlighting their uplifting messages. She also mentioned Stonebwoy’s song “Strength and Hope” as another example of secular music that offers motivation.
The debate over whether gospel artists should listen to secular music is ongoing. Last year, gospel minister Moses OK expressed a different view, stating that Christians should avoid secular music as it does not align with their faith. He argued that songs without God’s message could negatively impact one’s spirituality, encouraging believers to focus only on gospel music for spiritual edification. Moses added that the lyrics of songs carry spiritual power, and thus Christians should only listen to music that reflects the spirit of God.
