Rap sensation from Ghana, Freda Baffour Awuah, better known by her stage name Freda Rhymz, has opened out about the reasons behind her nearly two-year hiatus from the music industry.
Freda made it clear that her break was not a conscious choice, but rather a calculated action motivated by a number of problems, most notably disagreements with her previous record label.
Renowned for her dynamic presence and skill with words, the 2017 MTN Hitmaker Competition winner emphasized that going into hiding was a conscious choice made in order to fight for her creative freedom and take care of matters outside of her contractual obligations. She added that she has never considered giving up music, despite what some may have thought.
In an exclusive conversation with Fiifi Pratt on Accra-based Kingdom FM, Freda revealed this information.
Going into hiding wasn’t a conscious choice. You know, it was just life. It wasn’t intentional; life occurred, and as you can imagine, I was surrounded by bars at the time due to the beef and other issues. I went into hiding because I was having some disagreements with my label. I had to go because things weren’t going the way they were meant to,” she remarked.
Freda was a household name in the rap scene. However, she unexpectedly became embroiled in a beef triangle with rapper Eno Barony and singer Sista Efia one day. That almost led to a physical altercation when Sista Afia and Freda Rhymz happened to cross paths at TV3’s location.
A few weeks later, Sista Afia said that the fight was staged as a way for her and Freda Rhymz to appease opposing viewpoints and a divided fan base. Following this admission, Freda vanished from the rap world until six months ago.
