Instagram is reportedly developing a new feature that allows users to share real-time updates with friends on a map, according to a report by The Verge. This feature, which has been in progress since February, is currently being tested in a few select markets.
This concept is similar to Snapchat’s Snap Maps, which has offered a comparable feature since 2017. However, unlike Snap Maps, which allows users to make their updates public, Instagram is taking a more cautious approach, limiting visibility to select users. A Meta spokesperson emphasized that the feature is being developed with safety as a priority. It remains unclear how long the updates will stay visible on the map.
Instagram has experimented with map-based features before. In 2012, the platform introduced a feature that allowed users to view their photos on a map, but it failed to gain popularity since the photos couldn’t be shared with others.
