On Friday, gunmen attacked the Imo state capital, Owerri, Mbaitoli, and other locations, killied Prince Iheme, the elder brother of popular Nollywood actor, Osita Iheme.
The assailants also injured the state’s Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Martin Eke. Gunmen riding in Tundra operational vehicles fired sporadically, forcing people to flee for safety.
While commercial activities were abruptly halted, the roads were deserted as drivers abandoned their vehicles and fled.
Orji, a nearby community in Owerri, was also invaded by gunmen dressed in black and launched an assault on residents, passersby, and security agents.
He said, “They just killed a policeman now. They opened fire on them and were shouting, ‘There is a sit-at-home. We have asked you to go home. Stay indoors.’”
They recently murdered a police officer, he said. While yelling, “There is a sit-at-home,” they opened fire on them. You are being urged to return home. Keep to yourself.”
“This attack is politically motivated,” a witness who requested anonymity said. In order to get to Ubommiri, we had just finished at one campaign rally location. In Amawuihe, rather than Ubommiri, our convoy came under attack.
“Prince Iheme (Osita Iheme’s brother) was in the same car as the Commissioner for Solid Minerals. Pawpaw’s elder brother, Prince Iheme, was assassinated on the spot. The commissioner, who was sworn in two weeks ago, was severely underpaid. He was just taken to the hospital. They were in a Ford SUV at the time. “I hope he makes it.”
