Ghanaian musician Captain Planet has urged key players in the music industry to take immediate action to support hiplife icon Okomfo Kwadee before it’s too late. His appeal follows the circulation of a heartbreaking video showing the once-energetic artist in a distressed state.
On Wednesday, February 5, 2024, Captain Planet took to Twitter to express his concerns, writing:
“Ghana Music Industry, let’s come together and do something for Okomfo Kwadee before it’s too late.”
The viral footage shows Kwadee, born Jerry Anaba, singing some of his old songs in a worrying condition. Once a dominant force in Ghana’s hiplife scene, Kwadee gained fame in the early 2000s with hits like Abrantie, Ofie Nipa, Meko M’anim, Yeko Mmaa Pe, Ataa Adwoa, and Boyz Boyz. His distinctive storytelling and unique voice made him a household name.
Unfortunately, his career took a downward turn due to struggles with mental health and alleged substance abuse. These challenges have led to his decline and withdrawal from the public eye.
Radio personality Maximous Mensah, also known as Dr. Pounds, also shared the viral video, expressing deep concern: “What can we really do to help our brother? This is so sad! He’s a legend. GOD HELP OUR BROTHER.”
With his condition resurfacing in the public eye, there is renewed urgency for intervention. Captain Planet’s call to action serves as a wake-up call for the Ghanaian music industry to unite and extend support before the situation worsens.
