The defamation case between dancehall superstar Shatta Wale, whose actual name is Charles Nii Armah Mensah, and his former manager Lawrence Asiamah Hanson, better known as Bulldog, has been settled outside of court, according to the Accra High Court.
The necessity for a full trial was avoided when the attorneys for both sides informed the court during the court proceedings of the terms of the settlement that had been reached.
Shatta Wale’s legal team asked for a two-week delay to negotiate the settlement terms during the preceding court hearing on June 13, 2023. The latest hearing was postponed till June 27, 2023, after the court, presided over by Justice Joseph Agyemang Adu Owusu, granted the extension.
Bulldog’s lawyer, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, notified the court that the parties had satisfactorily fulfilled the requirements of the settlement. As a result, the attorney asked that the settlement’s conditions be adopted by the court as a consent judgment.
Major Selasie Atuwo, Shatta Wale’s lawyer, also broke the sad news that Madam Cynthia Quarcoo, a leading partner at the legal company handling the matter, had passed away during the hearings. According to reports, Madam Quarcoo passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness.
Shatta Wale published a statement on social media in November accusing Bulldog of being involved in the killing of Fennec Okyere, the manager of the rapper Kwaw Kese. This led to a legal conflict. Bulldog was the target of new malicious claims from Shatta Wale. Bulldog responded by filing a lawsuit, seeking compensation for the nasty and defamatory remarks.
The action has been settled out of court with the acceptance of the settlement conditions, sparing both parties from a drawn-out legal struggle.
The outcome of this well-known case demonstrates the effectiveness of out-of-court settlements and other alternative dispute resolution techniques in reducing the time, expense, and public exposure involved with legal processes.
