Instead of calling her Brandy, address her as Your Highness. The Vocal Bible took the BET Awards to church on Sunday night (June 26), performing her “First Class” freestyle with Jack Harlow. After leaving the stage, she revealed how the surprising number came to be.
“First and foremost, I can’t believe what just happened,” the icon said backstage to Entertainment Tonight. “I had no idea the crowd would be so enthusiastic… Oh my god, they were in it, and I’m so grateful to Jack for giving me this amazing opportunity to, like, be a rapper. For example, I’ve had a rap dream for years.
“I’ve always wanted to rap,” she continued. “And everyone was like, ‘Everyone just wants to hear you sing,’ or ‘Don’t do rap.’” But I’m like, I really like rap. I love hip-hop, I love everything, so…”
Also in a post on her Instagram profile, she expresses herself she felt during the night performance. This is how she captioned the post:

Later in the interview, Brandy revealed how she pulled off the big surprise, saying, “Jack didn’t realize that my brother [Ray J] and I were siblings on a radio show… And then it made all this noise from there. I didn’t notice the noise until about five days later. ‘Oh my god,’ I thought. So I sent a joking tweet saying, ‘I could take this guy on a rap.’ ‘Oh my god, that’s hip-hop, I kinda have to back that up,’ I thought. So I released a freestyle, which Jack loved and said, ‘Let’s do it on the BET Awards.’”
