Bongo Ideas Ordered to Pay GH₵170,000 in Defamation Case as Court Rules in Favor of Kojo Forex

On May 17, 2023, Kojo Forex filed an amended statement of claim in court, accusing Bongo Ideas of defamation. In his lawsuit, he sought GH₵1,000,000 in damages.

Following a thorough review of the evidence, Justice Forson Agyapong Baah of the Accra High Court, Jurisdiction 2, delivered a verdict on January 28, 2025. The court ruled in favor of Kojo Forex, awarding him GH₵100,000 in general damages and an additional GH₵50,000 for aggravated, exemplary, and compensatory damages. Additionally, Bongo Ideas was ordered to cover GH₵20,000 in legal costs.

Beyond the financial penalties, the court mandated Bongo Ideas to issue a public apology and retract his defamatory statements on Twitter within 21 days. Furthermore, a permanent injunction was placed on Bongo Ideas, prohibiting him from making or publishing any further defamatory remarks about Kojo Forex.

Background

Bright Kojo Onipayede, known as Kojo Forex, took legal action against Albert Nathaniel Hyde, widely known as Bongo Ideas, for defamation. The case stemmed from allegations that Bongo Ideas made damaging statements about Kojo Forex on Twitter, tarnishing his reputation.

Seeking redress, Kojo Forex requested GH₵1 million in damages and a perpetual injunction to prevent further defamatory statements. He also demanded a public apology and the removal of the offensive tweets.

This legal dispute followed an earlier incident in April 2022 when Kojo Forex had warned Bongo Ideas after the latter made critical remarks about him on Twitter. The ruling marks a major legal blow to Bongo Ideas, a figure known for his controversial social media presence.
