Benjamin Asare’s journey to becoming Ghana’s number one goalkeeper is a testament to perseverance, determination, and the support of a mentor who recognized his potential when few did.
Born and raised in Ghana, Asare faced significant financial struggles that made his football dreams seem distant. Without a steady income or reliable transport, he often found it difficult to attend training sessions. However, his fortunes began to change when Annor Walker, then coach of Great Olympics, noticed his raw talent.
At the time, Asare was playing for Sporting Mirren, but financial difficulties hindered his progress. Walker, known for nurturing talent, saw something special in the young goalkeeper and decided to step in. Despite Great Olympics also facing financial constraints, Walker was determined to support Asare’s development.
Recalling those days in an interview with Oil City Radio, Walker shared how he personally assisted Asare, even providing him with transport fare after training sessions when needed.
Asare’s breakthrough came when he signed with Hearts of Oak, where he continued to impress with his performances. However, his biggest moment arrived when he was called up to the Black Stars.
Making His Mark on the National Stage
Reflecting on Asare’s journey, Walker believes everything happened at the right moment.
“We always say God’s time is the best, so I believe this is the right time for Benjamin Asare.”
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Asare now faces the challenge of maintaining his top form to cement his place as Ghana’s number one goalkeeper on the global stage
