According to numerous law enforcement officials knowledgeable about the situation, Rakim Mayers, better known as A$AP Rocky, was held on Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport in connection with a November 2021 shooting.
Mayers arrived on a private jet from Barbados, where he had spent time with his girlfriend, singer Rihanna.
Rihanna was with Mayers when he was detained, according to law enforcement sources, and a search warrant was executed at Mayers’ Los Angeles home.
Mayers was being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department for a gunshot that occurred at 10:20 p.m. on Nov. 6 near Vista Del Mar and Selma Ave. The shooting victim later informed police that Mayers approached him on the street with a firearm while walking with two other people. According to police investigations, the victim said Mayers shot him three to four times and that one of the bullets grazed his left hand.
The shooting had gone unnoticed by the media. “Early this morning, LAPD officers detained Mayers for assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm) at the Los Angeles International Airport,” the LAPD said in a statement released after the publication of this item on Twitter. The case will be brought to the District Attorney’s Office of Los Angeles County for filing consideration.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit assisted LAPD in making the arrest.
Rihanna confirmed in January that she was expecting her first child. She told Elle magazine in March that she was in her third trimester. In February, the singer turned 34.
Mayers, now 33, was detained in Sweden in 2019 following a brawl between his crew and two guys on the street. Then-President Donald Trump lobbied for his release, telling Sweden that if he was not released, it would face serious consequences.
He was found guilty of assault and handed a suspended jail term as well as a fine of more than $1,000. He did not have to serve any further time because he had already spent a month in jail before the sentence was handed down.
