Apple partners with OpenAI to introduce ‘Apple Intelligence’

On Monday, Apple unveiled “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of new AI features for its devices, including a partnership with OpenAI.

This move aims to compete with rivals like Microsoft and Google, who have rapidly advanced their AI products.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California, that these updates would elevate the user experience of Apple products.

Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI, the company behind the breakthrough ChatGPT, will see ChatGPT integrated into Apple devices later this year.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the partnership on social media. Additionally, Apple Intelligence will be incorporated into the newly announced iOS 18 operating system.

Apple’s executives highlighted that privacy safeguards are integral to Apple Intelligence, ensuring products like Siri become smarter without compromising user data.

Analysts noted the challenge for Apple is to blend ChatGPT-like AI, which requires extensive data, into its products while maintaining strong privacy and security standards.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, stated that Apple Intelligence embeds powerful generative models into iPhones, iPads, and Macs, offering personalized and privacy-protected intelligence.

New features include creating custom emojis from text descriptions and generating email summaries. Siri will also support both written and spoken requests.

Federighi mentioned that AI enhancements would integrate ChatGPT with Apple’s operating systems later this year, providing a seamless user experience.

Experts like Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart emphasized the unique implementation of integrating ChatGPT into Apple devices.

Despite the early stages of generative AI technology, Silicon Valley believes it will revolutionize user interactions with smartphones and computers.

The WWDC announcements pave the way for the anticipated iPhone 16 release and signal a potential growth renaissance for Apple, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives.

Cook’s commitment to AI was previously indicated by the release of more powerful, AI-capable chips in iPad and MacBook models earlier this year.
