James Kwasi Appiah, the former Black Stars head coach, acknowledged that he took a major risk by giving debut calls to inexperienced players like Mohammed Kudus.
The current Kenpong Football Academy coach claims that certain Ghana Football Association officials opposed the decision to give young players call-ups at the cost of older players.
The coach stated in an interview that he may have been fired if Ghana had fallen short against South Africa in 2019.
“Not just [Mohammed] Kudus, but also some other young athletes. Some individuals believed the young players didn’t deserve to be called up to the Black Stars “He stated this during a YouTube interview with Dan Kweku Yeboah TV.
“I, though. I had observed them, thus I had faith in them. I constantly advised my guys to impress the Ghanaians rather than myself. It is to your benefit if you succeed.
“I was informed that if I lost the match, I would be fired, therefore my career was on the line. I didn’t mind since I believed I was acting in the nation’s best interests.
2019 November Kudus made his debut for Ghana against a rival team in a qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Kudus went on to establish himself as a regular for the national team after Appiah’s squad’s 2-0 victory against South Africa in the game.
