The Brazilian Supreme Court has given Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, a five-day deadline to submit documents confirming the appointment of its new legal representative in Brazil. This ruling, issued on Saturday by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, requires X to provide proof that Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao has officially been designated as the company’s representative, including relevant commercial registry documents.
On Friday, X’s legal team announced that they had appointed a new legal representative in Brazil, addressing one of the court’s key requirements for the platform to resume operations in the country. In late August, Brazil’s highest court ordered internet and mobile providers to block access to X after it failed to comply with legal mandates, including naming a local legal representative.
Under Brazilian law, foreign companies must have a legal representative to be operational within the country, with the designated person taking on the company’s legal responsibilities. X had a representative in Brazil until mid-August, but the company decided to shut down its offices and lay off its staff. This decision followed a prolonged conflict between Musk and Justice Moraes, as the company failed to comply with orders to tackle the spread of hate speech on the platform, something Musk has criticized as censorship.
