Dismas Mutai, a Kenyan student, has reportedly lost more than $21,000 (equivalent to KSh 2.8 million) that was intended to fund his university education abroad after placing risky bets on an online gambling game known as Aviator.
Mutai had been awarded a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in International Project Management at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in London. However, he confessed to losing the funds through online betting, a decision that has now left him battling depression and publicly seeking financial assistance.
In a heartfelt statement shared via Tuko News, Mutai opened up about the emotional toll of his actions:
“I’m not okay; I will no longer pretend to be okay. I have fallen into a disastrous trap, a trap that I never anticipated in my life. Depression is slowly taking me to the grave. You must have even noticed an unusual change in my behaviour. Aviator flew away with over KSh 2.8 million of people’s money.”
He also issued a sincere apology to his family, particularly his mother, for letting them down.
“To my mum and the entire family, forgive me. I understand the level of trust you had in me. I have weaknesses just like any other human being, and this has become my greatest weakness,” he said.
Despite the devastating loss, Mutai remains hopeful that he will be given another opportunity to get his life back on track.
