Ghanaian broadcaster and For the Records podcast host, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, has reportedly been arrested near Kingsby Hotel in Achimota, an incident that has drawn strong criticism from leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who view it as a threat to press freedom and democracy.
NPP Officials Condemn the Arrest
Following the news, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua strongly criticized the move in a Facebook post, calling it “a dangerous attack on democracy and freedom of speech.”
“The arrest of journalist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah by the NDC government is an attack on democracy! Ghana must not descend into tyranny. He must be released NOW!” Kodua declared.
Nana B Weighs In
The NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, also denounced the arrest, revealing that Okatakyie was taken into custody while heading home after sitting for an exam.
With mounting calls for clarification and his possible release, many Ghanaians are closely following the situation, awaiting a response from the government and security agencies.
