What happened to Mohbad? In 2023, police reported that Mohbad received injections from a nurse, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, including tetanus toxoid, paracetamol, and an antibiotic, Cetrazone, which caused an immediate reaction leading to vomiting, convulsions, and ultimately, his death. He was rushed to Perez Medcare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The hospital clarified that he didn’t die there and efforts to revive him had failed.

Call for investigations and an autopsy Fans and Nigerians began demanding an investigation due to the sudden nature of his death, especially since he had performed two days before. This led to a social media campaign for an autopsy and official petitions to authorities. The police launched an investigation, exhumed Mohbad’s body for an autopsy, and questioned 26 people, including his family.

Naira Marley and Sam Larry Mohbad had previously been signed to Naira Marley’s record label and was in a legal dispute over unpaid royalties. After his death, videos emerged showing him being assaulted by music promoter Sam Larry and harassment from the label. In one video, Mohbad even mentioned that if anything happened to him, Naira Marley should be held responsible. Both Marley and Larry, who were out of the country at the time, denied involvement.
A tribute for Mohbad Fans were dissatisfied with the quick burial, leading his management to organize a candlelight procession and tribute concert on September 21. Hundreds of fans, along with celebrities like Falz and Davido, attended to pay their respects.
The investigation Ogedengbe, the nurse who administered the injections, was named the prime suspect but has not yet been charged. Mohbad’s friends, Ayobami Sadiq (Spending) and Primeboy, were also considered suspects due to their involvement leading up to the singer’s death. Naira Marley and Sam Larry were also treated as suspects due to their history of cyberbullying, physical abuse, and threats toward Mohbad.
Paternity test dispute After Mohbad’s death, his father demanded a DNA test to confirm the paternity of Mohbad’s son, Liam, which led to legal disputes between his widow, Wunmi, and the Aloba family. Despite Wunmi’s claims of willingness to undergo the test, serving her the necessary legal documents proved difficult.
Cause of death? In May 2024, pathologist Prof. Shokunle Shoyemi revealed that the cause of Mohbad’s death could not be determined due to the advanced decomposition of his body by the time of the autopsy. This inconclusive result left fans and family members, especially Mohbad’s father, deeply frustrated, with suspicions of a potential cover-up.
Mohbad’s father expressed disappointment, feeling that the investigation might have been manipulated, but he remains hopeful that justice will eventually be served.
