The rumored redesign of Apple’s Mac Mini might eliminate the USB-A port.

Apple‘s upcoming Mac Mini won’t feature USB-A ports, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter. He reports that the new desktops will begin arriving in Apple’s warehouses in September, with the higher-end model, equipped with an Apple M4 Pro chip, set to ship in October.

The M4 Pro version will still offer plenty of connectivity options, including five USB-C ports (two in the front and three in the back), an ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack, according to Gurman’s sources. Additionally, the new Mac Mini will have an internal power supply. Despite its compact size, roughly the same as an Apple TV, the device is expected to pack in a lot of functionality.

Is it time to bid farewell to USB-A? Perhaps. But regardless of your stance on that, it’s definitely time for an update to the Mac Mini, which has had the same design for a long time. As Chris Welch pointed out earlier this month, the Mac Mini looks identical in both the 2012 and 2023 reviews. (Welch didn’t mention a review of the first version of the current Mac Mini design because The Verge didn’t exist in 2010.)
