Elon Musk has unexpectedly requested a California court to withdraw his legal case against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman.
The case accused them of straying from the company’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity.
The multi-billionaire’s lawyers filed a request to drop the months-old lawsuit without providing a reason.
This move came just a day before the court was scheduled to hear OpenAI’s request to dismiss the case.
BBC News has reached out to Mr. Musk’s lawyer and OpenAI for comments.
The latest filing sought the case’s dismissal “without prejudice,” allowing Mr. Musk the option to reactivate it later.
OpenAI responded to Musk’s criticism, stating that he had previously supported the for-profit structure and even proposed a merger with Tesla.
The conflict escalated earlier this week after Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to enhance its Siri voice assistant and operating systems with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Following the announcement, Musk criticized the partnership on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), claiming Apple was compromising user data by collaborating with OpenAI.
Despite Musk’s criticisms, Apple’s stock market value rose to a record high above $3 trillion.
In July 2023, Musk launched his own AI company, xAI, aiming to “understand reality.” In November, xAI introduced Grok, a chatbot with “a little humor,” to compete with ChatGPT and similar AI products.
