A YouTuber, known as Alex Choi, has been arrested in California for allegedly orchestrating a stunt where fireworks were fired at a speeding Lamborghini from a helicopter, according to US prosecutors on Thursday.
Choi, whose real name is Suk Min Choi, has nearly one million subscribers on his YouTube channel, which features “the greatest car shenanigans.
” The stunt, filmed on a dry lakebed in California last summer, led to Choi being charged with “causing the placement of an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft.”
If found guilty, Choi could face up to 10 years in federal prison.
In the video titled “Destroying a Lamborghini with Fireworks,” Choi allegedly presses a “fire missiles” button while two women in a helicopter shoot fireworks at the speeding Lamborghini.
Behind-the-scenes footage shows Choi coordinating the shoot and thanking a camera company for supporting his “crazy stupid ideas.
Choi is suspected of buying the fireworks in Nevada, where they are legal, because they are illegal in California. He was set to appear in a Los Angeles court on Thursday, with arraignment scheduled in the coming weeks.
Last year, another YouTuber, Trevor Jacob, was jailed for six months after deliberately crashing his plane to increase viewers on his channel and then lying to investigators.
Dramatic footage of Jacob ejecting from the plane and parachuting to safety in California in 2021 was viewed millions of times on YouTube.
